RUMFORD — The River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition will join with the Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments and Northern Oxford Solid Waste on Saturday, June 8, to host free household hazardous waste collection.

It will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Region 9 parking lot in Mexico. This event is open to the towns of Rumford, Mexico, Dixfield, Peru, Roxbury and Byron.

Some examples of household hazardous waste include cleaners, solvents, chemical lawn fertilizers, weed and insect killers, swimming pool chemicals, driveway sealers, rat poison, mothballs and rechargeable batteries.

“Look for the words poison, danger, corrosive, toxic, volatile, flammable, caution or warning on the label,” Patricia Duguay, executive director of the RVHCC, stated in a news release.

Latex paint will not be accepted. Latex paint is water-based and is not hazardous. Look for the terms latex, water-based, or clean up with water on the label to identify latex paint, she said.

If at all possible, wastes being brought to the collection event should be in the original, securely closed containers.

If any container is leaking, pack the whole thing into a bucket. Never mix chemicals and do not smoke or eat while handling or transporting hazardous materials.

For more information, contact Duguay at 364-7408 or rvhccduguay@gwi.net.
