Lisbon Centre Cemetery group

LISBON — The Lisbon Centre Cemetery Association in the center of Lisbon on Lisbon Road will meet from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, May 3, at the cemetery.

The association is dedicated to preserving this historic cemetery and also selling burial lots. The meeting this week will begin preparing the cemetery for Memorial Day on Monday, May 27. All interested people are welcome. For information call 207-725-7975.

Korean War chaplain sought

LEWISTON — A ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of the Korean War will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 27, at Lewiston Veterans Memorial Park.

Organizers are looking for a chaplain or retired chaplain who served in the Korean War, or at least served in Korea, for the ceremony.

There will be several speakers, a short memorial service and a presentation of Korean medals, plus several displays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Chef of the Year Gala is May 6

LEWISTON — The Chef of the Year Gala will take place Monday, May 6, at the Ramada Inn. Reception starts at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7 served from 20 chef stations from area restaurants.

The evening will end with entertainment from comedian George Hamm. Appetizers, entrees, dessert and entertainment all for $25 per guest or $200 for a table of 10.

Tickets are available at the Ramada Inn and can be purchased using cash, credit or debit. The Green Ladle has tickets available; payment must be checks or cash in the exact amount.

Free cooking classes at Ark

LEWISTON — Free cooking classes will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays, May 8 and 22, at The Ark, Lisbon Street.

Cheryl Farley, host of the Ready Set Go Healthy television show, will share her trade secrets on how to make delicious plant-based meals, sure to please the palate and the heart.

Farley got her start in the health and fitness world through her father who operated Jack LaLanne Health Clubs in California. At 18 she began teaching exercise classes and was soon on her way to learning and practicing lifestyle changes that focused on preventing disease rather than simply treating it.

Her passion for healthy living has lead her to teaching cooking schools in various communities in addition to working with other health professionals within the Reversing Diabetes Seminars which are operated by Weimar Institute.

Meditation for survivors, caregivers

LEWISTON – The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing will offer a free meditation workshop for cancer patients, survivors and caregivers. “Mindfulness Meditation: A Tool for Working with Change” will take place Thursdays, May 9 through May 30, from 6 to 7:15 p.m. at the Dempsey Center, 29 Lowell St.

Staying present in the midst of difficulty and change takes some conscious practice. Bereavement Coordinator and Inter-Religious Chaplain for Beacon Hospice, Angela Lutzenberger, will show how mindfulness meditation can help us recognize and feel our experience in each moment with nonjudgmental attention. Each session is limited to 15 participants and will consist of mindfulness instruction, group practice and a discussion of questions and concerns that arise.

Doo-Doo Drive Thru compost sale

LISBON FALLS — A compost sale dubbed Doo-Doo Drive Thru will be held Saturday, May 11, at Justalittle Farm, 58 Ridge Road, sponsored by the 4-H Leaders’ Association of the Androscoggin-Sagadahoc Counties 4-H Clubs.

The sale opens at 8:30 a.m. The seasoned compost, aged three years, was a project of area 4-Hers. Cost is $5 per cubic-foot bag; level truckloads are also available.

Proceeds benefit Androscoggin-Sagadahoc Counties 4-H scholarships, camps and programs, including national educational trips for youths.

LEWISTON — The Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter will present “The Basics: Memory Loss, Dementia, and Alzheimer’s Disease” from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, May 13, at SeniorsPlus, 8 Falcon Drive.

The program is open to anyone who would like to learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

Memorial Day parade in L-A

LEWISTON — A Memorial Day parade on Saturday, May 25, will start at Kennedy Park in Lewiston and travel to Chestnut Street, Lisbon Street, Main Street, across Longley Bridge and around the Plaza in Auburn, returning to Longley Bridge and ending at the Veterans Memorial Park in Lewiston.

The ceremony starts around 10:30 a.m., with speeches, music, a memorial program, laying of the wreaths, unveiling of the 24th stone by a representative of the U.S. Army Reserve and stone 25, with a representative from the American Legion Bikers.

Dempsey exercise workshop set

BRUNSWICK – The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing will offer a free exercise workshop for cancer patients, survivors and caregivers. “Fighting Fatigue” will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at Parkview Adventist Medical Center.

Cancer-related fatigue is one of the most common side effects of cancer and its treatments. Although it may seem counter-intuitive, decreased physical activity, which may be the result of illness or of treatment, can also lead to tiredness and lack of energy. Nate Littlefield, ACSM certified health fitness specialist, will teach tips and techniques for safely becoming more active, which can decrease the feeling of fatigue.

Quilting class begins May 21

MONMOUTH — The ‘Early Summer’ Quilting Class will begin with the arrowhead quilt block on May 21. The classes will be held at Packard Activity Center from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday nights through July 9. The cost of eight classes is $25.

This is a great pattern for a two-color quilt. It is very versatile and can be adapted to fit any color combination and size.

A beginner can follow this pattern and the experienced quilter will find it challenging. Create a quilt from start to finish in a very short time.
