Norway road, park clean up

NORWAY — The Norway Parks & Recreation Department will join with the Art Gouin Street Clean Up to hold the annual Community Spring Clean Up of town roads and Lake Pennesseewassee Park on Saturday, May 4.

From 8 to 11 a.m. work will consist of picking up branches and raking the public boat landing area, trails and beaches. Litter pick-up will take place on the streets.

Any time given is appreciated and helps ready the town and park for summer use. Bring your own gloves and rakes.

Rummage sale at First U on May 4

PARIS — The annual spring rummage sale will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 4, at First Universalist Church, 36 Pine St.

A bag sale of $1 per bag will take place from 12:30 to 1 p.m.

There will be clothes, shoes, linens, white elephant, toys, jewelry and lots more bargains.

Bean suppers resume May 4

PARIS — The First Baptist Church of Paris will hold the first old-fashioned bean supper of the summer on Saturday, May 4.

There will be several types of home-baked beans, homemade casseroles, brown bread and biscuits, pickles, hot dogs, beverages and assorted homemade desserts.

Serving begins at 5 p.m. The cost is $7 for adults and $3.50 for children.

First U. Church May 5 service

PARIS — Dr. Art Judge will lead the worship service at the First Universalist Church on Pine Street for the May 5 service.

Music for the 10 a.m. service will be directed by Linda Stowell and Sunday School is under the direction of Renee Wales.

Coffee, brunch and fellowship will follow and all are welcome. Childcare is available and the First Universalist Church is wheelchair accessible.

Summer Food Service Program

PARIS — The Oxford Hills Middle School and Paris Elementary will participate in the Summer Food Service Program.

Breakfast will be served from 8:30 to 9 a.m. and lunch will be served from noon to 12:30 p.m. at Robert’s Farm and Paris Elementary.

Meals will be provided without charge to all children and are the same for all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age of disability and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.

Western Maine Knitting Guild

PARIS — The Western Maine Knitting Guild will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 7, at the First Congregational Church, East Main Street. A fashion show will follow the business session. Each member should wear something that they have made to model.

Lewiston Bridge Club winners

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Bridge Club winners at the Lewiston Armory on April 29 were as follows: first, Mary Trafton and Luke Merry; second, Jan and Vern Arey; third, Jeanine Kivus and David Lock; fourth, Ellie and George Wigton.

Winners of the ACBL Charity game on April 30 were: first, Patricia Garcia and David Lock; second, Luke Merry and Mike Quinn; third, Marta Clements and Patricia Quinn; fourth, Kathy Burden and Mary Trafton.

Hands-on gardening

NORWAY — Vegetable gardening is a skill best learned in the company of other gardeners. Having others around to identify pests or explain a technique is oftentimes all it takes to have a successful first garden.

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension is offering this type of opportunity in its Hands-On Gardening program. Participants will meet for two indoor gardening sessions at the extension office from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Mondays, May 13 and 20, and then we will move to the Alan Day Community Garden in Norway and grow a vegetable garden together for the entire season.

Cost for the entire season is $10 and preregistration is required by calling the office at 743-6329 by May 8.

Information on Deep Wood Farm

BRYANT POND — Dianne Ward of Deep Wood Farm will give a general overview of all that she offers with her summer riding programs at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at the Whitman Memorial Library.

Ward gives private and group lessons to all ages and abilities including senior citizens, beginning riders on up to advanced. They have public trail rides and weekend camping with the horses.

The program is open to the public at no charge and light refreshments will be served.

Breastfeeding class May 9

NORWAY — The Family Birthplace at Stephens Memorial Hospital will hold a breastfeeding class for new and experienced mothers from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9, in the Harper Conference Center at the Ripley Medical Office Building, 193 Main St.

Shannon Nassa will lead the class, which will cover the facts of breastfeeding and help to dispel the myths about it. Learn skills for successful breastfeeding. This class will share the support services available to breastfeeding mothers.

VFW Post plans BYOB dance

HARRISON — The Ronald St. John VFW Post on the Waterford Road will have a BYOB dance from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday, May 11, at the post.

Heritage Society plant sale

HARTFORD — The Hartford Heritage Society will hold its annual plant sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at the J. & O. Irish Museum, Main Street/Route 140.

Perennials, annuals, houseplants, seedlings and bulbs will be available. The sale will include plants from gardeners throughout the area, as well as donations from local nurseries.

There will be garden baskets for raffle and chances for winning three yards of loam. Learn tips from those whose gardens you’ve admired and share your experiences, too. Fill your flowerbeds with plants that are accustomed to Maine weather.

All proceeds from the sale support the society and renovation of the museum. Refreshments will be served and tours of the museum will be available.

Free community supper May 11

OTISFIELD — A free community supper will be held Saturday, May 11, at East Otisfield Free Baptist Church on the Rayville Road. Seatings will be at 5 and 6 p.m. 

Menu includes barbecued chicken, mashed potatoes, peas, fiddleheads if available, salads, rolls, assorted pies and cake, coffee, tea, punch.

PARIS — United Methodist Women will hold their annual spring sale from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 11, at Deering Memorial United Methodist Church, 39 Main St.

PARIS — Oxford Hills Honey Bee Club’s workshop will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at the Oxford County Extension Center, 9 Olson Road.

Mother-daughter banquet May 16

Vendors wanted for 4-in-1 sale

SUMNER — The Congregational Church of East Sumner will hold its annual 4-in-1 sale of perennials/baked goods/yard sale/raffle items on Saturday, May 18, in the vestry and parking lot of the church on Route 219.

All proceeds will benefit the work of the church, which includes the Sumner Food Pantry, Youth Camp scholarships, a college scholarship for Buckfield High School seniors and community assistance.

The event begins at 9 a.m. rain or shine, and will go until 1 p.m. or until everything is sold.

Vendors may rent a 10-foot by 10-foot space for $10. Vendors should provide a table and tarp or easy-up. There are some spaces available under the pavilion. To reserve a space and for more information, contact Paula at 515-2485 or Peggy at 388-2074.
