Spring clean-up day at garden
PARIS — Spring clean-up day is scheduled for the McLaughlin Garden and Homestead to prepare the grounds for the season. The work party is planned for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 1. Lunch will be served. All are invited to participate.
Before the public arrives to visit the garden, horticulturist Kristin Perry and volunteers must get it ready. The growing season has begun and experienced gardeners and novices who want to learn about gardening are invited to share in the work and fellowship.
The garden has some tools but volunteers may want to bring their own pruners and gloves.
The Power Propagator volunteer group also meets under Perry’s supervision. Work is planned from 9:30 a.m. to noon May 14, July 11, Aug. 20 and Sept. 20. This is a chance to learn and participate in dividing and potting plants.
Perry and volunteers are preparing for the official garden opening on May 10, National Public Garden Day. Named the Wildflower Festival by the garden in honor of Bernard McLaughlin’s plantings of native Maine flowers that bloom early in the season, the garden welcomes visitors Friday, Saturday and Sunday May 10, 11 and 12, Mother’s Day.
The greatest numbers of visitors for the season are expected during the Lilac Festival Friday through Monday, May 24 to 27.
