AUBURN — The School Committee will hold a public hearing Wednesday on its 2013-14 budget proposal.

The hearing will begin at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers of Auburn Hall.

The latest budget proposal is $38.37 million, an increase of $2.4 million from this year. For a home valued at $150,000, it would increase property taxes $128.

In March, Superintendent Katy Grondin recommended a $37.6 million budget with $543,000 in cuts, including the Land Lab teacher, replacing several teachers and an elementary librarian with ed techs, not replacing a bus and cutting course reimbursement for teachers.

It included $1.7 million more to cover teacher pensions and special education, teacher raises and updating student computers.

Committee members last week said they didn’t like the cuts, and told Grondin to restore them and provide a budget that comes closer to meeting the state recommendation of how much Auburn should spend on education, the so-called Essential Programs and Services formula. State legislation is being proposed to financially punish communities that do not make the minimum EPS recommendation.

In the newest budget recommendation, Auburn EPS spending would be $1.5 million below the state minimum, instead of the current $2.25 million below the state EPS recommendation.

As proposed, Auburn taxpayers would spend $15.37 million on education and the state would spend $19.64 million on Auburn schools. — Bonnie Washuk
