LEWISTON — Gary Hirshberg, chairman of the organic dairy products producer Stonyfield Farm, will deliver the commencement address and receive an honorary degree at Bates College’s commencement next month.
Hirshberg is prominent in the organic food movement. Stonyfield’s organic products are produced in Londonderry, N.H.
Bates will confer honorary degrees on three other leaders in the realms of environmental history and preservation, education and medicine and medical research during the ceremonies Sunday, May 26, according to an announcement Tuesday from the college.
The other degree recipients will be:
* William Cronon, environmental history expert and teacher whose writings have shaped public discourse about nature, wilderness preservation and the liberal arts
* Elaine Tuttle Hansen, Bates’ seventh president, a scholar of Middle English literature and executive director of the Center for Talented Youth at The Johns Hopkins University
* Dr. Vivian W. Pinn, a physician and leader at the National Institutes of Health who fought for greater gender equity in women’s health, medicine and research
The commencement will begin at 10 a.m. and be streamed live at bates.edu/live.
Clayton Spencer, concluding her first year as president of Bates, will confer the honorary degrees.
