LEWISTON — Bowdoin’s Melissa DellaTorre outdueled Bates’ Kelsey Freedman in a 1-0 win for the Polar Bears in NESCAC softball action Friday.
With the teams knotted at zero through five innings, Adriane Krul hit her second double of the game to right center to lead off the sixth inning for the Polar Bears (23-9). She moved to third on a ground ball, and scored on Casey Correa’s sacrifice fly to right.
DellaTorre allowed the Bobcats (7-12) just two hits in the game, both in the third inning. Molly Brown hit a one-out single up the middle, and Mary Lewis moved her to second on a two-out bunt single.
UMaine-Farmington, Maine Maritime split
FARMINGTON — Freshman Haley Berry singled home the go-ahead runs in the fifth inning to propel the University of Maine at Farmington to an 11-8 win over Maine Maritime in game two of a NAC softball doubleheader to salvage a split.
Farmington leadoff hitter Amy Jones finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and four runs batted in, including a two-run home run to left field in the third inning.
Kaitlyn Bartlett also went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, including a solo home run to account for the Beaver’s (10-11) one run in the second inning.
In game one, Farmington held a 3-2 lead through six innings but the Mariners (12-15) rallied with four runs on three hits and a UMF error in the top of the seventh inning to steal the win.
Leah Jackson keyed the comeback with a two-out, three-run double to center field, plating Sabrina Keach, Cindy Schultz and Jessica Menges. All three runs were unearned.
College baseball
Trinity 4, Bates 3
LEWISTON — Bryan Ginsberg’s pinch hit single in the seventh inning put Trinity College ahead to stay as the Bantams took a 4-3 win over Bates College in baseball action Friday at Leahey Field.
The Bobcats (11-12) out-hit Trinity 11-to-6, but left nine men on base.
Peter Burrows pitched a complete game for the Bantams (15-13). Bates got three hits in the ninth off of Burrows, but failed to score.
Bates evened the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second when freshman Sam Berry lofted a high, tailing fly ball over the fence in left field, his first collegiate round-tripper.
