PARIS — Bail was set at $750 Friday in 11th District Court for a Fryeburg teen accused of setting a fire in the Fryeburg Academy gymnasium after being expelled from the school.

Dyllan A. Wilson, 18, faces four charges in connection with a fire set to a bulletin board Wednesday. He is accused of arson, aggravated criminal mischief, criminal mischief and criminal trespass.

Officer Richard Murray said Thursday that several witnesses saw Wilson enter the gymnasium at about 3 p.m. Wednesday and set fire to papers on a bulletin board. Wilson left and students extinguished the fire, Murray said.

Wilson was arrested Wednesday evening.

On Friday, Assistant District Attorney Richard Beauchesne asked for $1,000 cash bail or a contract with Maine Pretrial Services. “This is an extremely serious charge with a potential for loss of life,” Beauchesne said.

Beauchesne pointed out that the academy gymnasium was destroyed in a 2005 arson.

Judge Paul Cote said it wasn’t clear that Wilson had any intent to burn down the building, because he set the fire in front of other people. Cote said he didn’t want to minimize the charge — arson is a Class A offense punishable by up to 30 years in prison and a $50,000 fine — but said the motives and circumstances weren’t clear.

Attorney Sarah Glynn, who represented Wilson at Friday’s initial hearing, said Wilson had no criminal history and no money for bail and asked for a lower sentence.

Cote set bail at $750 cash or a Maine Pretrial Services contract. Wilson’s bail conditions are that he must stay off Fryeburg Academy grounds and not possess incendiary devices. His arraignment is set for July 1 in Oxford County Superior Court in Paris.
