CHAPMAN — Detectives remained Thursday evening at a Chapman home business where an elderly man was found dead and his wife fatally injured, according to Maine State Police Lt. Christopher Coleman.

Marcus Sykora, 81, was found dead in the basement of the Chapman Road home in this small community neighboring Presque Isle. His wife, 77-year-old Sheila Sykora, was also found in the basement but was still alive. She was rushed by ambulance to a local hospital, but later died, according to Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.

McCausland said the couple had recently moved to Chapman from Missouri to live with their daughter at her home.

A 911 call was received from the home about 11:20 a.m., and when first responders from the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department and the Maine Warden Service arrived at the house, the man was dead in the basement and his wife was seriously injured.

Coleman said police were not yet ready to classify the crime.

“We are still trying to wrap our arms around it,” he said Thursday evening. “Detectives are going to remain on the scene through the evening. I expect the bodies to be removed from the home tonight and taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Augusta for autopsy on Friday.”

Detectives do not suspect anyone outside the home is involved in the deaths and expect to release more information Friday after the medical examiner finishes the autopsies, according to McCausland’s statement.

“What we’re going to do is give the medical examiner time to do the autopsies and examinations and I expect we’ll have more details on Friday,” said McCausland. “So we’re not releasing any further details until at least Friday.”

When asked if the Sykoras’ daughter was home at the time of the deaths, discovered the Sykoras in the basement or called 911, McCausland wouldn’t provide any further information.

“I‘ll have those details tomorrow,” he said.

The home is on a remote part of Chapman Road and a sign reading “Garden Gate Fabrics” is posted outside the two-story wooden structure. Police cars and the state police mobile evidence processing unit lined the driveway. Crime scene tape blocked the driveway entrance.

A records check indicated that a Marcus and Sheila Sykora lived in Kansas City, Mo., on North Crystal Avenue. A woman who answered a call to the number for that residence said the family has been notified. She declined to comment further and referred all questions to family members.
