WILTON — Firefighters cleared water from the front of the Tractor Supply Store at 979 Route 2 Thursday morning after responding to an alarm and then report of smoke filling the building.
A customer, Jessica Thimlar of Chesterville, went in to the store to get pet food about 9:30 a.m.
A portion of the ceiling near the front of the building fell and a cascade of water came with it, she said as she watched from the parking lot. Smoke then came, she said.
According to Thimlar, about a dozen customers were in the store and had to walk under the collapsed ceiling and through the falling water to get out the front door.
The employees did a good job making sure everyone was out of the building, she said, as she stood in single digit temperatures in wet pants.
Mutual aid from Farmington, Jay and East Dixfield helped Wilton firefighters at the scene.
More information will be posted as soon as it becomes available.
