RUMFORD — Senior Jon Petrie was recently elected to the RSU 10 board of directors as a student representative. Mountain Valley High School’s Student Council assembled a slate of candidates and oversaw the election on Election Day. Both students and staff members were invited to vote.

Even though Petrie will not take his seat on the school board until the other high schools complete their elections, he looks forward to the experience. “I ran because I could make a difference not only in my school but in my district by sharing my ideas,” he said.

“While I can’t vote, I support new initiatives rather than cutbacks,” Petrie said. “I think we should fund the science and other departments more and would like to see more teachers for more one-on-one time with students.”

Petrie is an active student leader. He serves as the secretary of the class of 2013 and vice president of the student council. Petrie was selected for National Honor Society as a sophomore and is currently the public relations officer. He has challenged himself academically with advanced placement classes in history and English.

Social studies teacher Christopher Carver has had the pleasure of having Petrie as a student in four classes and in homeroom.

On hearing the outcome of the election, Carver said, “I am pleased that Jon was elected by his peers as the student representative for the Mountain Valley Region to the RSU 10 board of directors. Jon is very attentive of politics and current affairs, and I know he is looking forward to serving his community. I am certainly very proud of his achievement.”

Petrie has applied to the University of Maine at Orono to study history with a pre-medical concentration.

Petrie is the son of Deanna and Gary Petrie of Rumford. His sister, Sydney, is a freshman at MVHS and their younger sister, Kendall, attends Meroby Elementary School. His older sister, Bryanne, works at Mountain Valley Middle School as an education technician and was a 2004 graduate of Mountain Valley High School.
