CANTON — Lewis C. Ladd, 94, formerly of Roxbury most of his life, died Monday, Dec. 3, at the Victorian Villa Rehabilitation & Living Center.

He was born in Phillips, July 27, 1918, the son of Cleveland and Ada (Pease) Ladd, and had attended Roxbury schools.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as a private first class, Military Police, Co L, 232nd Infantry Div. including in central Europe and Rhineland and received the Purple Heart.

Lewis worked as a conductor for the Maine Central Railroad for more than 40 years until retirement July 27, 1979. He built a camp at Sabbath Day Pond with his father in the summer of 1933 and stayed in tents while building the camp. He hauled the material into camp with a horse. Camp life was his favorite pastime along with hunting and fishing.

He was married in Lisbon, March 17, 1940 to Margaret P. Garbotz, who died Nov. 25, 1980.

Survivors include nephews, Richard and Rodney Allen; nieces, Janice Frantz and Elaine Lavoie; and close friends, Clayton Sargent and his wife, Pauline, of Rumford.

He was predeceased by his parents; wife; and a sister, Eunice Allen.
