ROXBURY — Authorities and selectmen in Roxbury are on the lookout for vandals who destroyed a new cemetery sign less than two weeks after it was installed.

Roxbury Selectman Michael Worthley said the new wooden sign installed at the entrance to Old Frye Cemetery, located beside Swift River Road at the Mexico town line, was torn down and broke in half sometime overnight Friday. Worthley said the damage was discovered Saturday morning.

The sign was one of three installed recently at cemeteries in the Roxbury-Mexico area. The sign for Old Frye Cemetery was jointly purchased by Roxbury and Mexico and installed by Mexico workers. The other two were installed by volunteers on Wednesday.

Each sign bears the year in which the cemetery was established.

Worthley said a police report was filed with the Mexico Police Department and a $100 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. Anyone with information is asked to call the Mexico Police Department at 207-364-5686.
