Spook Walk planning meeting

OXFORD — A planning meeting for the Halloween Spook Walk will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at the Oxford Community Center.

Food drive to help pantry

NORWAY — The AARP, the Rotary Club and the Uptown Cruizahs will hold a food drive for the Norway Paris Food Pantry from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, in the parking lot of the Norway Savings Bank on Main Street.

Items needed include canned tuna, canned fruit, 100 percent fruit juice, stew, chili, hearty soups, canned tomatoes, canned vegetables, pasta sauce, pasta, white and brown rice, dried beans, cold cereal, oatmeal, pancake mix, peanut butter and jelly, powdered or evaporated milk, Parmalat, and also low-sugar and low-sodium foods.

The Uptown Cruizahs will have vehicles on display and there will be a truck to fill with food. Bring donations in boxes or plastic bags to make them easier to handle.

Benefit for Brayden on Oct. 13

NORWAY — A celebration will take place Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Norway American Legion Post 82.

At 17 months, Brayden was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma of the abdomen. He has endured surgery, chemo, radiation, stem cell treatments and has just turned 3. He and his family have made it so now it’s time to party.

There will be a $10 donation at the door. There will be a dessert bar, live music by the all-girl band Hot Flash, a 50/50 and a Chinese auction. The post will be selling burgers and dogs for the benefit. “Celebrate Brayden” bracelets will be available for purchase.

Bulbs to be workshop topic

PARIS — Everything Bulbs will be the topic on the afternoon of Saturday, Oct. 13, at the McLaughlin Garden. Fall planted bulbs for both food and flowers will be discussed.

At 1 p.m. the theme will be garlic. Harriet Robinson and Dean Zeilon, who grow garlic in their respective gardens, will lead the discussion. Planting, growing and harvesting will be explained. There will be taste tests of different varieties of garlic and recipes will be available. This demonstration is free. Garlic will be for sale.

At 2 p.m. Kristin Perry, horticultural director at the garden, will present a slide show on unusual flowering bulbs and how to grow them. Now is the time to plant bulbs for next season’s gardens, and the free, illustrated talk is designed to inspire.

At 3 p.m. participants will have an opportunity to learn to force bulbs for winter color. Perry will lead the group in planting bulbs in containers and will give directions on how to get the bulbs to bloom indoors this winter. Because of the materials involved, preregistration is required. For a fee of $22, participants will take home two plastic containers full of bulbs.

Square dance set for Oct. 13

PARIS — The Swingin’ Bears Square Dance Club of South Paris will hold its October dance from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Oxford Hills Middle School, 100 Pine St.

The caller and cuer for the evening will be the husband and wife team, Kip and Linda Moulton of Scarborough. The level of square dancing will be Mainstream and Plus. The round dancing will be the cuers choice.

Refreshments will be served at intermission. There will be door prizes and a Pot O’ Gold drawing. Admission $6 per person. Non-dancers are welcome at no charge

Tractor Club to meet Oct. 13

WATERFORD — The Maine Antique Tractor Club will hold a meet at the Waterford World’s Fairgrounds, 36 Irving Green Road, on Saturday, Oct 13. The event will start at 10 a.m. with several different classes, all are done by weight. For insurance reasons the event is open to members only, but anyone can become a member that day.

The event is free for the general public; bring a lawn chair or a blanket. A lunch wagon will be available or bring a picnic.
