Bridgton rec program sign-ups
BRIDGTON — Bridgton Recreation is accepting registration for the following programs.
Mad Science will run from Oct. 31 through Dec. 12 on Wednesdays from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. at Stevens Brook Elementary School. Sign-ups for the six-week fall session are due Friday, Oct. 26. Forms are available at the Bridgton Town Office, online at www.bridgtonmaine.org/res_recreation.php and will be distributed around the SBES for children grades K-5.
The after-school karate program is still accepting registration forms. This program runs at SBES on Thursdays from 3:20 to 4:20 p.m. Forms are available at the Bridgton Town Office and online at www.bridgtonmaine.org/res_recreation.php.
Youth basketball registration forms will be distributed through Stevens Brook school and available online at www.bridgtonmaine.org/res_recreation.php as well as available at the Bridgton Town office and LRMS Office beginning Oct. 9.
The Bridgton Community Halloween Party will be held at the Town Hall building on Wednesday, Oct. 31, from 5 to 7 p.m. The event is free to the community and is geared to children 12 and under and their families. There will be games, a bounce house, prizes, pumpkin decorating and more. The Recreation Department is seeking volunteers for this event. Contact Tom Tash at 647-8786.
Emerson to be society topic
WATERFORD — The Waterford Historical Society program on Thursday, Oct. 11, will feature John O’Brien, long-time teacher at Deerfield Academy, speaking about Ralph Waldo Emerson. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Wilkins House in Waterford Flat.
Emerson, one of the founders of American Literature, lived in Concord, Mass., but spent some time in Waterford with his relatives.
Some of the central ideas of Transcendentalism were developed in correspondence with his aunt, Mary Moody Emerson.
Society treasurer Ralph MacKinnon also will speak about his family connection. Potluck refreshments will be served. The program is free and all are welcome.
Senior Fall Frolic on Oct. 12
RUMFORD — The Oxford County Sheriff’s Office TRIAD will sponsor the free Senior Fall Frolic from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at Rumford Eagles, 129 Rumford Ave.
The day will be filled with laughter, music, information and food. There will be a Chinese ticket auction, 50/50 drawing, nickel beano, live band, coffee, cider and doughnuts and lunch with homemade apple crisp.
Fundraiser for shelter
NORWAY — A Toll Booth Fundraiser to benefit Responsible Pet Care will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, on Fair Street.
Pet owners with dogs on leashes are invited to come and stand at the edge of Fair Street. The shelter needs help to wave and say thank you for donations given to help homeless pets.
This is a “Be Kind to Animals Week” activity. For information call 743-8679.
Movie on health care
NORWAY — The Maine AllCare and Public Interest Forum will present The Healthcare Movie at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at Fare Share Commons, 443 Main St.
The 65-minute documentary tells the real story about the health care systems in Canada and the United States, and how they evolved to be so different. The film is narrated by Keifer Sutherland, who is the grandson of the “father of Canadian health care,” Tommy Douglas.
Admission is free. There will be a discussion and question-and-answer period led by Maine AllCare president Dr. Julie Pease of Brunswick.

Women sought for grant
PARIS — The Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a society of women educators, will award a $300 grant to one recipient this fall.
Applicants must be women who have completed their freshman year of college, are going into the field of education and come from a town in one of the following school units: RSU 17/MSAD 17, RSU 10 or RSU44/MSAD 44.
Applicants should submit a one-page letter telling about their educational background, future plans and why they feel they would be a good choice to receive this grant.
The deadline for letters of application is Tuesday, Oct. 23. Submit to Toni Hamlin, 8 Frederick Ave., South Paris, ME 04281.
