HARTFORD, Conn. — Trinity College was tough on both sides of the ball for the Bates College football team in its 2012 season opener, as the Bantams pulled away for a 37-16 win, their 44th straight at Jessee/Miller Field on Saturday.

Perennial NESCAC power Trinity (1-0) outgained Bates (0-1) 266-103 on the ground and 161-17 through the air. Evan Bunker, who tied for the NESCAC rushing lead last season, ran for 146 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries to pace the Bantams.

Bates did a number of things well, committing no turnovers in the game and coming up with a few big plays on defense and special teams and translating them into an early 3-0 lead and a pair of touchdowns that closed a 21-3 deficit into a 21-16 game late into the third quarter.

Middlebury 42, Bowdoin 18

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Bowdoin College football team couldn’t recover from an early deficit and dropped its season-opener to Middlebury on Saturday, 42-18.

The Polar Bears (0-1) will play their home-opener next Saturday against Amherst at 1:00 p.m. The Panthers (1-0) will travel to play Colby in Waterville next Saturday.

Middlebury’s McCallum Foote finished the day 26 of 44, tossing for 285 yards with five touchdown passes as the Panthers amassed 416 yards of total offense.Grant White and Romero both saw action at quarterback for Bowdoin, with White going 5-11 for 25 yards with a pair of interceptions. Romero finished the game 13-20 for 153 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Williams 41, Colby 7

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Despite a touchdown pass and eight catches from Colby College sophomore Luke Duncklee, the Williams College football team had 410 yards of total offense on the way to a 41-7 victory over the Mules in the season opener Saturday.
 
Williams sophomore quarterback Adam Marske was 22-for-27 for 277 yards and three touchdowns. He had two of the three touchdowns in the opening 20:28 of the game to give the Ephs (1-0) a 17-0 lead.
 
Marske hit Darren Hartwell on a 25-yard scoring pass down the right sideline after a Colby fumble gave Williams the ball on the 25.  After a 39-yard field goal by Joseph Mallock gave Williams a 10-0 lead, Hartwell caught his second score of the game on a 6-yard pass from Marske.

Maine Maritime 34, Fitchburg 14
FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Fitchburg State football team collected its first New England Football Conference (NEFC) Bogan Division victory this afternoon, defeating Maine Maritime Academy, 34-14 at Elliot Field.

Steph’fon Teague paced a balanced Falcons attack, posting his third consecutive 100-yard game with 112 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Teague averaged 7.4 yards per carry, while surging for a 36-yard touchdown early in the second quarter.

Maine Maritime opened the scoring early in the first quarter, finding the pay dirt on its initial possession with a 65 yard, 14-play drive. Billy Wetherbee capped the Mariners’ touchdown drive with a three-yard run, giving Maine Maritime a 7-0 advantage through one quarter of play. The Mariners’ junior rushed for 168 yards on 21 carries, including a 52-yard jaunt.

Men’s soccer

NMCC 2, CMCC 1

AUBURN — The Central Maine Community College (5-2) men’s soccer team fell to Northern Maine Community College, 2-1, for the second time this season Saturday.

Both teams had opportunities in the first half, but only Northern Maine found the back of the net. At 8:40 in, Brandon Anthony struck a ball from a tough angle that carried over the head of Central Maine’s goalkeeper Alex Pinto and off the post to give the Falcons a 1-0 edge. That score held until halftime.

The Mustangs began to dominate play in the second half,  but Northern Maine struck again at 16:31 when Josh Allen headed a ball off a corner kick and pushed the Falcons ahead, 2-0. Alex Lyons was finally able to give the Mustangs life when he collected a deflected shot from Spencer Osgood and scored at the 26:30 mark. The remainder of the game was intense but neither team could score again. Brad MacKenzie had six saves for Northern Maine while Alex Pinto had four for Central Maine.

Women’s soccer

Keene State 3, USM 0

GORHAM — Junior Beverly Cole had a goal and an assist as the visiting Keene State College Owls shut out the University of Southern Maine 3-0 in a Little East Conference women’s soccer match Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

With less than three minutes to play in the opening half, Cole scored the Owls’ second goal of the match when her partially stuffed shot from 10 yards out squirted inside the left post.  The goal was the second of the season for Cole.

Keene State sophomore goalkeeper Torrie Crenson registered two saves to earn her first shutout of the season.  Temple and senior Katie Cobb of Lewiston split the goalkeeping chores for Southern Maine. Temple made six saves in the opening half while Cobb stopped four shots in the second half.
