TURNER — Selectmen issued two junkyard licenses and one renewal Monday night, and set deadlines for cleaning up two others that are closing.
Thomas Heikkinen is closing his junkyard at 308 Fern St due to ill health. The town is giving him until Nov. 30 to clean his site.
George Spear is also shutting down his junkyard at 6 Bates Road, and his license was extended for one year to allow him to clean up the site. He can not bring in any new material.
David Richardson of 1630B Auburn Road and Jesse Walker of 448 County Road were issued licenses on condition they plant additional trees to screen their sites. Code Enforcement Officer Roger Williams will periodically inspect the sites to determine compliance.
David Richardson of 140 Harlow Hill Road had his license renewed for another year.
In another matter, selectmen reconsidered the personnel policy on longevity pay. Since funds had been approved at town meeting, they decided to award longevity pay that is earned this fiscal year. There will be no more longevity pay after June 30, 2013.
Selectmen decided to postpone chip sealing until next year because Rampart Bituminous could not guarantee getting the work done by Sept. 27. The town had offered a 10 percent bonus for completing the work by then.
The board reported that recently Hartford voters unanimously approved funds for fire protection services from Turner, Canton and Buckfield.
The new firetruck pump was tested and exceeded expectations by moving 1,400 gallons per minute rather than the specified 1,250 gallons per minute. The town received $2,413 from a recent Homeland Security Grant. Turner will spend its share for a $2,400 deck gun to be installed on the new truck.
