LEWISTON — There will be a memorial service for a recently recognized fallen marine from the Vietnam War at Lewiston’s Veteran’s Memorial Park on Saturday, Aug. 25, at 1 p.m. Second Lt. Straughan D. Kelsey Jr. gave his life for his country on June 3, 1967.

Blood drive set for Sept. 1

LEWISTON — The American Red Cross and L-A Harley Davidson are teaming up to help avert a late summer blood shortage over the Labor Day weekend. Eligible blood donors can give the gift of life on Saturday, Sept. 1, at the dealership, 839 Main St., from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

“The summer season is a difficult time for blood collections,” said Pete Morrison, donor recruitment manager for the American Red Cross. “We are very excited that L-A Harley Davidson will once again be taking on the challenge of organizing a blood drive during the upcoming holiday weekend when the need for blood is greatest.”

In addition to being scheduled at a crucial time, the blood drive is being held in honor of blood recipient Rachel Miller. Miller, now an undergraduate student at the University of Southern Maine, has the distinction of having received 298 blood transfusions – more than almost anyone else living in Maine. She was diagnosed with FEL, an extremely rare and deadly blood disease, as a toddler. Hundreds of volunteer blood donors and an unrelated bone marrow donor helped save her life.
