HERMON — A Bangor woman injured in a three-vehicle collision on Union Street that occurred Saturday afternoon has succumbed to her injuries, her son said on Tuesday.

“My mother passed away [Monday] afternoon,” Mike Savage of Bangor said of Mary Savage, 83.

Mary Savage had been on life support in the intensive care unit at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor after being injured when the car in which she was a passenger reportedly was hit from behind and forced into oncoming traffic, police have said.

She was being driven by her daughter Melissa Savage, 55, of Bangor who was apparently rear-ended by a white Chevrolet truck driven by Nicholas Mitchell, 21, of Levant, Sgt. Bill Birch of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office has said.

The force of the impact sent Savage’s maroon Ford Focus into oncoming traffic, where it struck a Nissan truck driven by David Nelson, 64, of Exeter.

Mike Savage said Monday that his sister had been released from the hospital, but “has a broken rib and lower back pain.”

Four of the five people involved in the accident went to EMMC, Birch said. The conditions of Nicholas Mitchell and Joan DiNatale, 52, of Exeter, who was traveling in the Nissan truck, were not available early Tuesday.

Detectives trained in accident reconstruction spent hours investigating the crash, which occurred between Billings Road and Bond Road near Pleasant Hill Campground. The roadway was closed for more than five hours.

Mike Savage said his sister and mother were heading to Levant to get cucumbers from a farm stand when the collision occurred.
