Back-to-school sale
PARIS — The Thrifty Gift Shop back-to-school sale will begin Thursday, Aug. 9 Clothes sizes infant to adult is available at the shop,. 659 Park St.

Thrift shop sale

OXFORD — The Alpha and Omega Ministries Inc. Alpha and Omega Thrift Shop will hold its “Big August Yard Sale” from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Wednesday, Aug. 8 to 15, on Route 26 next to the fish market.

Bert Rugg, executive director, said a tent will be on the site for rainy day shopping.

The Alpha and Omega Thrift Shop, 39 Brown St., is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Rugg said they are looking for volunteers to help in the shop.

Heywood supper
 
NORWAY — The annual Heywood Club public supper will take place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11 at four corners, Crockett Ridge Road. There will be baked beans, chicken pies, casseroles, rolls, homemade desserts and hot and cold drinks.
 
The cost is $7 for adults and $3 for children 5 and under.
 
Fair meeting

WATERFORD — The Waterford World’s Fair Association will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, at the fairgrounds, 36 Irving Green Road, North Waterford.

All members are encouraged to attend to get the final results from this year’s fair and to discuss what plans will be made for the upcoming year.

The next dance will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, with the band Brazen Cane. Admission is $10 a person. For more information, call Lisa Scribner at 890-7669.

Supper-dance

LOCKE MILLS — A supper-dance will be held from 5 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, at the American Legion Hall.

Music will be provided by the Jones Band. Menu will include breaded chicken, coleslaw, potato, green beans and gingerbread and whipped cream.

Doors will open at 4 p.m. Cost will be $7 for supper, $10 dance, $3 children.

Author to speak

WATERFORD — Author’s Night will be held at the Waterford Library on Wednesday, Aug. 22. As one of a series of presentations by local authors, Judy Green will discuss her writing and read her short story, “A Good, Safe Place,” from the anthology, “Thin Ice: Crime Stories by New England Authors,” at 7 p.m.

The story was nominated for the Edgar Award in the Best Short Story category in 2011.

Green is a graduate of Brown University, with master’s in linguistics from
the University of Michigan. She served as director of Oxford Hills Adult
Education for 30 years.

She is the author of 25 high-interest/low-level books for adult
new readers and for adults studying for the GED high school equivalency
test, and she had a story selected for publication in each of the 10
“Crime Stories by New England Authors” anthologies published by Level
Best of Cambridge, Mass.

Her most recent short story, “Hit and Run,” will
appear in “Blood Moon: Crime Stories by New England Authors,”
scheduled for publication in November.

Green is a seventh generation resident of Waterford,  living down the road from
the Warren Farm, which has been in the family since 1787.
