Local historian and author Doug Hodgkin identified the church in this photo, which ran in the paper on July 2, as the First Baptist Church built in 1853 at the corner of Canal, Main and Lisbon streets, site of the Gateway Building today.
In 1870, when the Baptists relocated to a new church on Bates Street overlooking the city park, the Methodists took it over, according to Hodgkin. Then a temperance organization made its headquarters there. Finally, it was used for commercial purposes, including a casino.
The building was torn down to make way for the Gateway Building in 1901.
