Auburn Water District Supt. L.K. Parker suggested today that Auburn taxpayers with metered water supplies are being overly apprehensive about the cost of lawn sprinkling and he pointed out that the use of water on lawns this summer would in no way endanger the water supply, as in previous years. Under the old billing system, Parker pointed out, each homeowner with an outside spigot paid an extra $4 on the April quarterly bill, for the use of water on lawn or garden through the summer. He explained that $4 on the metered rate would purchase 120,000 gallons of water and stated, therefore, that watering the lawn is “actually inexpensive.”

With the “tinkering” apparently over, a contract for the reconstruction of Auburn’s inefficient energy-recovery plant should be signed on Wednesday, according to Mayor John J. Cleveland. He said city officials and representatives of the international firm CGC Municipal Services of Jenkintown, Pa., had reviewed details. “It’s been through a series of levels, with each wanting to doctor and tinker a little.” He said, “The best that I know is all of that has been accommodated, and I don’t want anybody else to read it or they’ll want to make changes,” he joked.
