MONMOUTH — The Monmouth Garden Club will conduct its biannual tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 30, rain or shine. The Cateslot country estate in Leeds will be included along with seven other gardens in Monmouth and Leeds.

There will also be a boat ride to an island to view an archaeological site.

Cateslot began with the purchase of a 17-acre cow pasture in an old apple orchard in the late 1970s. It has since grown to 200 acres of fields and recovering woodland now laced with carriage trails for driving horses.

The family home is centered in the gardens which, over time, have grown to cover about 5 acres. The gardens now contain a wisteria laden arbor, stonewalls, a gated hemlock-walled garden retreat, a gazebo, fountains and garden structures strategically placed to enable relaxed viewing of the gardens.

There are two small landscaped pools with waterfalls near a summer house used for dining throughout the season. There is a small rose garden along with perennial beds and multiple plantings of hybridized day lilies throughout the grounds.

Magnolias, apple trees, a dawn redwood, a tulip tree, birches, pines, maples, rhododendrons and other shrubs are scattered throughout the grounds, contributing to a garden style of informality.

Lunch will be available from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the East Monmouth Methodist Church vestry on Route 135. The menu includes lobster rolls and a choice of homemade salads, desserts and beverages.

Tickets, $15, are available at Roak The Florist in Lewiston, Gammon’s Garden Center in Auburn, Springbrook Golf Course in Leeds, D R Struck Landscaping Nursery in Winthrop and Longfellow’s Greenhouses in Manchester. Tickets ($20) will be available at each garden site the day of the tour. For more information call 933-3069.
