Earlier in the week, Peter Wade, a NorthStar paramedic based in Farmington, was awarded the Excellence Award by Maine EMS in a ceremony at the Hall of Flags in Augusta. The award, bestowed by Maine EMS Director Jay Bradshaw, recognized Wade’s contributions to EMS education and operations, as well as his many years of consistent and excellent patient care.
This year’s theme for EMS Week was “More Than A Job: A Calling” and this dedication was felt throughout the evening. Stan Wheeler, a Franklin County Sheriff dispatcher, led the invocation and also had accolades for the service. After dinner, NorthStar Director David Robie briefly highlighted the accomplishments of the organization over the past 12 months, which led into the awards section of the program.
Tom Doak of Wilton took the honors as NorthStar’s “EMT of the Year.” This annual award recognizes the one employee at NorthStar who best represents NorthStar’s mission of professionalism, excellent patient care, community service, fiscal responsibility and overall excellence. On a daily basis working with years of experience under his belt, Doak shows his dedication and untiring support of NorthStar and the EMS profession.
Doak was cited for his management roles, his committee work and his consistently excellent patient care. Doak, who comes from a long line of EMS professionals, is a dedicated family man with a great sense of humor and an unfailingly positive attitude.
In presenting the award, Robie said, “Tom is all the things that are great about EMS professionals: Highly skilled, giving freely of his expertise and time, with a wonderful positive attitude. Tom’s experience, his educational approach to quality and his care for his patients is good for EMS, and very good for NorthStar. We are proud and fortunate to have such an outstanding paramedic in our service.”
Other awards were given during the ceremony including: “Above and Beyond” awards to Felicia Harris, EMT-I, Farmington; Jeremy O’Neil, paramedic, Phillips; Vanessa Jordan, EMT-I, Kingfield; Becky Morin, paramedic, Carrabassett Valley; and Dave Ryan, paramedic, Carrabassett Valley. These awards are given for actions and performances that are a cut above the norm.
