FARMINGTON — A man accused of holding a woman at gunpoint during a drug deal last year pleaded guilty to lesser charges Wednesday in Franklin County Superior Court.

Shane Webber, 25, of New Vineyard, was initially indicted on kidnapping, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and violating condition of release.

The kidnapping charge was dismissed in a plea agreement and Webber pleaded guilty to felony criminal threatening and misdemeanor violating condition of release.

Justice Michaela Murphy allowed Webber to enter into a one-year deferred disposition, which means if he follows court orders, he will be allowed to withdraw his plea to the felony criminal threatening charge and plea to a misdemeanor threatening display of a weapon, District Attorney James Andrews said in court.

Webber’s attorney, Ron Hoffman, said his client didn’t want to take the chance of going to trial and possibly be convicted of a felony.

Webber and Dahlon Campbell, 22, of Jay were accused of holding a woman at gunpoint at a New Vineyard Road residence in Farmington on Nov. 30, 2011. According a Farmington police affidavit, the men were holding shotguns on the woman because “her male friend” had sold them $2,000 worth of fake drugs and she would be released only if the male friend brought back the money.

Webber was accused of bringing the guns to support Campbell, Andrews said in January.

“Mr. Webber brought the guns,” Andrews previously said. “This was Mr. Campbell’s drug deal.”
