PARIS — The Paris Public Library is offering a variety of activities for Oxford Hills children this summer.

The library continues its annual summer reading challenge for youths between the ages of 1 and 14 years old. They are invited to hone their reading skills during the summer and read for rewards. For each 10 hours a child reads between June 18 and Aug. 14, they will receive a chance in a raffle for a Kindle Fire.

Also, the top three readers of the summer will receive $25 Walmart gift certificates, and the next 20 top readers will receive $10 Walmart gift certificates. All participants will receive a certificate and other rewards.

The reading challenge concludes with an ice cream sundae party on Saturday, Aug. 18, with the Kindle Fire drawing at 1 p.m. and the gift certificates awarded afterwards. To join the reading challenge, no sign-up is necessary, but official reading logs will be available at the library or on its webpage, www.paris.lib.me.us. Last summer’s 97 participants read more than 203,000 minutes.

The library will also hold weekly math and word puzzle contests. Each week the library will furnish new math and word puzzle sheets which children may complete and enter into drawings for $5 gift certificates in both the math and word categories. The puzzle sheets for the week may be picked up anytime at the library, with the drawings on Friday afternoons.

From June 18 to Aug. 13, the library will again be hosting weekly “Lit Picnics” on Mondays at noon. Families are invited to bring picnic lunches to the library and listen to acclaimed stories centered on that week’s theme. After the readings, everyone is invited to enjoy the library’s various games and crafts.

The library is also continuing “Silly Science” on Wednesday afternoons, from June 20 to Aug. 15. The program features weekly science projects, such as making tea-bag hot air balloons, finger boomerangs and Scytale messages. Children may drop in the library anytime between noon and 4 p.m. to try the experiments.

The story time for preschoolers, “Tots’ Tales,” will be held every Thursday morning at 10 a.m. throughout the summer. Stories and crafts around a weekly theme are shared. Time spent listening to the Tots’ Tales or Lit Picnic can be counted for the summer reading challenge.
