DAR to honor anscestors

SABATTUS — Burnt Meadow Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, was started on April 17, 1948, by women of the surrounding area who could trace their ancestry to a Revolutionary War Patriot, be it a clerk, messenger, legislator, juror, farmer or fighter.

On Saturday, June 9, Burnt Meadow Chapter will honor the graves and lives of some deceased members.  Ceremonies will take place at the resting place of Irene Barschdorf, Lisbon Cemetery, at 9 a.m.; the resting place of Charlene Bickford Bartlett, West Bowdoin Cemetery, at 10; and the resting place of Grace Perkins, Pleasant Hill Cemetery, in Sabattus at 11.

After the ceremonies, those wishing to eat may chose a local establishment.
If there are any questions about joining Burnt Meadow Chapter, call Violet Gerber at 375-2698 and leave a message.  For questions about June 9, people are asked to call by Friday, June 8.

Volunteers sought for St. Mary’s

LEWISTON — American Cancer Society Cancer Resource Center volunteers can make a difference in the lives of cancer patients by sharing their knowledge, experiences and compassion in local hospitals and cancer centers.

Volunteers assist visitors in obtaining information about cancer prevention and detection, treatment guidelines, clinical trials, local community resources, support groups, cancer education classes. Patients and their families will be able to ask questions, pick up literature, or borrow books to help them in their fight against cancer.

“Whether you are available once a month or once a week, even for an hour, you can brighten the life of a cancer patient,” said Terry Baker, community executive for the American Cancer Society.  “Resource center volunteers receive specialized training and can choose flexible schedules that work for them.”

LISBON — Jim Baumer, who grew up in Lisbon Falls, will be a guest speaker Wednesday, June 13, at the Lisbon Historical Society meeting.
His topic will be the magical world of Moxie and he will read from his latest book on the soft drink, “Moxie: Maine in a Bottle.”

GRAY —Kindergarten and pre-kindergarten registration for fall is under way at the Fiddlehead Center.
Fiddlehead offers several options, including full or half day and a two-year kindergarten program starting at age 4.  Private pre-k and kindergarten programs are offered.

Surviving loss

LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center is offering a free workshop for cancer survivors and caregivers.

“Surviving and Thriving: Living Fully Through Transition and Loss” will take place from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, at CMMC, 12 High Street in conference room A.

Marian Claxton, M. Div., chaplain, Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice, will show how to better understand reaction to loss, explore ways to honor the losses and transitions, and recall how to open hearts to the joy and blessings each day.
