NEW VINEYARD — The second annual Wayne’s Ride and Barbecue is scheduled for Saturday, June 9, in honor of Wayne A. Fletcher, killed in a motorcycle accident near the Big Apple store in Wilton on June 12, 2010.

According to Wayne’s brother, Nick Fletcher, who is organizing the ride, last year’s ride included nearly 30 motorcycles. To date there are approximately 50 motorcyclists who have committed to attending.

Various area businesses have donated items and gift certificates to be raffled off at the barbecue. Wayne’s mother, Lauralee Fletcher, is donating a handmade quilt that she put together in Wayne’s honor.

Donations are still being accepted and all who wish to contribute should contact Hannah Fletcher at 652-2004. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House in Portland.

The ride will take place rain or shine and will begin at the home of Douglas and Lauralee Fletcher, 692 New Vineyard Road. Preregistration for the ride begins at 9 a.m. and the ride is expected to start at 10. The roughly 70-mile route will include stops at the Big Apple in Wilton and the Pratt Corner Cemetery in New Vineyard where Wayne is buried, as well as several other stops along the way.

A barbecue lunch, for $5, will follow for all who would like to attend at the home of Nick and Hannah Fletcher, 1716 New Vineyard Road.

Wayne, 28, a well known local man, had aspirations of becoming a Maine State Trooper. He was killed when a car turned in front of him as he was traveling west on Routes 2 and 4.
