DEAR SUN SPOTS: I found a ceramic jug about 30 years ago. On the jug it has a “2” on it and underneath that it says Bangor Stoneware Co., Bangor, Maine.
Do you have any information on this jug and the company? Thank you. — D.N., Lewiston
ANSWER: Sun Spots looked online and found the following information about the company:
“The Bangor Stone Ware Company operated in Bangor, Maine, between 1880 and 1917. Andrew (Anders) Persson, an immigrant from Sweden, was its founder. The company referred to itself as the ‘manufacturers of stone & fancy pressed ware of every description.’ A copy of ‘The Stoneware Manufactory at Bangor,’ chapter 24 in M. Lelyn Branin’s book ‘The Early Potters and Potteries of Maine’ (Middletown, Conn.: Wesleyan University Press, 1978) is filed with the collection. It gives a good history of the company.”
According to the statewide library computer system (http://minerva.maine.edu), there is a copy of “The Early Potters and Potteries of Maine” in both the Auburn and Lewiston libraries that you might want to check out.
Considering the short time the pottery operated and the age of your jug, it could have some value. Dan, the owner of Orphan Annie’s (96 Court St., Auburn, 782-0638), said he would be glad to take a look at your jug and help you with an appraisal.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: In response to the May 21 letter from the man looking to have his sink repaired, I just wanted to let you know that I refinish porcelain sinks and tubs as well as fiberglass tubs and shower walls. I can restore a dull or dingy color to a vibrant white or change that pink or whatever color tub/shower you have now to a new color you’d like in your bathroom. Thank you for updating your file on my business. — Steve Corro, corrosfiberglassing@hotmail.com

DEAR SUN SPOTS: As a life member of the YWCA, I’m participating in the YWCA garage sale on June 15 and 16 at the YWCA on East Avenue. All monies are to be used for the summer youth programs.
I’m hoping your readers who might have items for the sale would call me and I’ll pick them up. The YWCA is a vital part of Lewiston-Auburn, and your support is most appreciated! — Mary Ann Norcross, 783-6651, norc@roadrunner.com
