National Day of Prayer

WILTON/FARMINGTON — The public is invited to join in this year’s area National Day of Prayer events. These events are organized according to Judeo-Christian values. The theme will be “One Nation Under God” and take place on Thursday, May 3, at noon for one hour.

In Wilton the gathering will take place in Bass Park at the head of Wilson Lake.

In Farmington, participants will meet in Meeting House Park on Maine Street.

Events will occur rain or shine, so dress for the weather. Prayers will be offered for the community, including emergency services, military, families, churches, government, media, business and education.

A special prayer by Dr. David Jeremiah, honorary chairman of the National Day of Prayer Task Force this year, will be read as well. For more information, contact the event coordinator, Bernadette Harvell, at 778-2981.

Spaghetti for drum program

CARRABASSETT VALLEY — On Saturday, May 5, a spaghetti supper will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Carrabassett Valley Anti-Gravity Center. Tickets are $6.

At 7 p.m., dancing to the music of the Atlantic Clarion Steel Band will take place at the Sugarloaf Inn. Admission is $6. Proceeds from the sale of the T-shirts, dinner and dance will support the MSAD 59 steel drum program.

This free event is hosted by the Western Mountain Trash Can Band, a community group that spreads the joy of live steel drum music to help support the steel drum program in the local school district. Donations are always welcome.

Genealogy meeting

FARMINGTON — The Sandy River Valley Chapter, Maine Genealogical Society, will meet at the Farmington Public Library, Saturday, May 5, at 10 a.m. The speaker will be Jack Battick, MGS president, who will talk about “The Navy and its Service during the Civil War.” Anyone with an interest in genealogy is welcome.

UMF summer registration

FARMINGTON — Registration for University of Maine at Farmington 2012 May and summer term courses is now open to members of the public not currently enrolled in a UMF degree program. Course selection includes a variety of classroom-based, Internet and travel courses with courses in arts, business, humanities, education, natural science and social science available.

Complete course listings can be found online at www.umf.maine.edu. To register, click on “Take a Non-Degree Undergraduate Course” under the Community Resources heading. On the course registration page, select the “Take One Course” option, click on the May 2012 or Summer 2012 tab and select a subject to see the courses offered.

Members of the public can preregister for any course online by adding it to the online book bag. They will then be contacted by a representative from the UMF Merrill Center.

Individuals may also register in person from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Merrill Center in UMF’s Merrill Hall, 224 Main St.

May term courses will begin on May 14. Summer term courses will begin on June 25. Both sessions last between four and five weeks. Course registration is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
