Pomona degree meeting

MINOT — Androscoggin Pomona No. 1 will meet on Wednesday, May 2, at West Minot Grange 42 at the corner of Routes 124 and 119 for a regular meeting to confer the 5th Degree. A 50/50 raffle will be held along with the attendance drawing. There will be a 6:30 p.m. supper for $5 and a 7:30 p.m. meeting.

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Senior Citizens Cribbage League winners at the Multi-Purpose Center on April 26 were: first place, Stan Tetenman and Ed Hinckley; second place, Cecile LeBlond and Sonny Beaudoin; third place, Andrea Metayer and Don Maillette; fourth place, Roger Briggs and Roger Labbe; fifth place, Mike Martin and Victor Bernier.

Seniors trips

SABATTUS — The Sabattus Seniors will hold a meeting and meal on Thursday, May 3, at the Maxwell Hall. Doors will open at 11 a.m. Meal will be a Kentucky Fried Chicken box meal.

Garage sale for Haiti

LEWISTON — St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center’s annual garage sale will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at the Lepage Conference Center.

To donate items for the sale, drop them off at the Lepage Conference Center at 99 Campus Ave. between 6:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Friday, May 4. No appliances or clothes, please.

Proceeds from the sale benefit the ongoing outreach ministry to the people of Haiti. This includes providing medicines and medical supplies, brought by our Work Retreat Teams who go to St. Boniface Hospital in the village of Fonds des Blancs and to Fr. Marc Boisvert’s ministry to young people at Pojwe Espwa.

Naturalization ceremony

TOPSHAM — Mt. Ararat Middle School will host a Naturalization Ceremony in the Orion Theater at 10 a.m. Friday, May 4. The entire student body will be present for the event.

Twenty-five to 30 people will become American citizens. The assembly will have guest speakers, band performances, choral performances and students ushering family members of the future citizens.

This is a tremendous opportunity for Mt. Ararat Middle School students that will enrich their learning experience. The topic also aligns well with state learning standards as well as school curriculum targets.

LEWISTON — 5-2-1-0 de Mayo! will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at the Lewiston Middle School gym.

Eating right and being physically active can be a challenge in today’s busy world.

The fun event will feature demonstrations, activities and resources to help incorporate healthy choices into a family’s routine. There will be free giveaways and tasty snacks to try.

Ready…Read! book drive

LEWISTON — Members of the community are being called to help young children gain more early literacy experience to better prepare them for learning in school. This year, Ready…Read!, a collaborative effort of the Lewiston and Auburn public schools, adult education programs, libraries and area child care providers, will be holding a book drive to collect books for infants and toddlers, which will be distributed to families in need.

New and gently used books may be donated at the Lewiston and Auburn Shaw’s and Hannaford Supermarkets from May 5-12. The Ready…Read! goal is to collect at least 1,000 books to provide to 100 families in need.

Research shows that reading to infants, toddlers and pre-school aged children will help them learn to enjoy reading and will better prepare them for learning once they enter kindergarten. Reading to children just 20 minutes every day throughout these early years will give them more than 608 hours of pre-literacy experience by the time they begin school.

Rainbow Girls yard sale

NEW GLOUCESTER — The youth group, Lewiston Assembly, Order of Rainbow for Girls will hold a rain or shine yard sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at the Masonic Hall on Route 100.

The first $150 earned will be donated to the Worthy Advisor’s charity, the Make-A-Wish-Foundation. Remaining profits will benefit the local assembly.

Auburn Chapter of DeMolay will offer a Coca-Cola vending machine to the highest bidder.

Legion public breakfast

AUBURN — American Legion Post 31 will host a public breakfast from 7:30 to 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 6, at the post home, 426 Washington St. Cost of the meal is $5.

Rebekahs honor Odd Fellows

AUBURN — Liberty Rebekah Lodge 94 will honor the brothers of the Odd Fellows Lodges in the area and will also have as guests members of the Rebekah Lodges in District 3 and others in the area, Monday evening, May 7, at the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs Home, 85 Caron Lane.

The evening will begin with sandwiches, salads and desserts at 6 p.m. in the recreation room. Entertainment will be a program in charge of Margaret Sjostrom and Esther Tucker titled, “Name That Tune,” with a few jokes thrown in. Guests are welcome to join in with a joke or reading.

The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. in the new space recently completed called “The Lodge Room” that is located in the same area as the recreation room. Fortier Arcanum meeting

LEWISTON — Fortier Chapter/Council Members of Royal Arcanum Chap. 52 (Association Canado-Americaine) will gather at the Multi-Purpose Center at 6 p.m. Monday, May 7, for the group’s final meeting of the 2011-12 year. This will include the election of officers for the year 2012-13.

Following the meeting will be a social hour with refreshments. Providing musical entertainment will be fiddler Rebecca Grube accompanied by guitarist Don Cunningham. They will present a program of French Canadian reels as well as jigs and other tunes from Ireland, where Grube will be attending graduate school next year. A 2008 graduate of Lewiston High School, Grube earned a bachelor’s degree in music from Moravian College in Pennsylvania last spring.

Golden Age Group dinner

AUBURN — The Golden Age Group of the IHM Parish will meet at 11 a.m. for a social hour, Tuesday, May 8. Historical show, tell

LISBON FALLS — The Lisbon Historical Society hosted its annual Show and Tell Antiques Night on April 11 at the MTM Center. There were more than 30  displays and a variety of interesting stories to go with them.

Items included a 1912 memorial edition of “The Sinking of the Titanic – Thrilling Stories told by Survivors” shared by Madeline Junkins; a 1799 edition of “The Duties of Town Officers – Bylaws and Punishments” by Merton Ricker; a 1901 arithmetic book by Peggy Cote; and a beautifully framed commemorative document of Sue Poliquin’s great-great-grandfather, Elbridge G. Coolidge, a Civil War soldier who served with the 29th Maine.

John Baumer, Frank Anicetti, Luella Merryman, Erma Smith, Jo-Jean Keller, Alfred Smith, Dorothy Smith, Anita Guay and others also added to the excitement of the evening with stories and artifacts of the past.

The Lisbon Historical Society is at the MTM Center, 18 School St., and is open Thursday’s from 1 to 4 p.m. Meetings are held monthly on the second Wednesday beginning at 7 p.m.. Free and open to the public.
