100 years ago, 1912
City Marshall Rowe of Auburn went to Portland to get a young man arrested at Scarboro for the Auburn department which wanted him in connection with a house break in that city. The alleged boy thief was captured after a running battle in which he fired his revolver at his pursuers. Admitting his guilt, he told the Portland officials that he was led to commit crime thru reading dime novels.

50 years ago, 1962
The Clark Shoe Co. of Auburn, one of the leading shops in the Twin Cities which has, at peak periods, a payroll of over 80, has not closed for an undetermined period of time, as reported, company officials said. A person “in the know” on the local shoe operations, told the Journal that the majority of Clark employees had been laid off.

25 years ago, 1987
Chip Morrison’s desk at the Auburn City Building is usually indistinguishable as such, with papers, reports, memos, notes strewn here and there among the framed pictures of his children. But on Friday the desk was clear and the photographs were gone as Morrison wrapped up his final day on the job as city manager before moving his briefcase to Augusta, where he takes over Monday as the state’s first Commissioner of Administration. He called his stay as the city’s chief administrator “a nine-year love affair with the community; it’s the only place to work.”
