CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire forest officials say prospects that a Boston hiker survived conditions after a fall in Mount Washington’s Tuckerman Ravine are very grim.

They said Tuesday that conditions remained too treacherous to resume the search for 67-year-old Norman Priebatsch, who fell into a deep crevasse Sunday.

Officials say Priebatsch was hiking with three other people Sunday afternoon in the ravine when he lost his footing and slide over a band of rocks before falling into the crevasse.

Forest officials say Priebatsch was unresponsive even before he dropped into the crevasse.

Snow ranger Jeff Lane was lowered 50 feet into the crevasse and said he could see another 80 feet down but could not see or hear Priebatsch.

Lane said it is a recovery effort, as opposed to a rescue.
