Maine State Police say a Hancock couple was killed this morning when their car crossed the road and into the path of an oncoming car on Route 1 in Sullivan.

Cynthia Johnson, 59, was driving. Her was husband, George Johnson, 58, was the passenger. Both were killed instantly.

Police said Johnson’s car veered into the opposite lane around 8:30 a.m. and slammed into a car driven by Melissa Dominy, 44, of Bar Harbor. Dominy was flown to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with multiple injuries. 

The crash closed down that section of Route 1 for several hours. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office assisted troopers with the investigation.

State Police said they do not know why Johnson’s car crossed the center line.
