PERU — A truck from the Good Shepherd Food Bank delivered 7,000 pounds of food to the old elementary school building, now a food pantry, on March 3.

Seventy-five individuals from the River Valley signed in for themselves and family, then loaded up boxes of vegetables, canned goods, meat, and bakery products.

Friends of a Mission youth group helped with distribution of the food.

During that weekend 18 teens and young adults joined the group in fasting for 30 hours in order to raise money for hungry children through World Vision’s 30-Hour Famine event. They learned about the children they are helping as well as doing local service projects.

As well as aiding with distribution, the teens helped organize the newly relocated pantry, cleaned the upstairs of the old school for the Friends of Peru School, and visited the Victorian Villa in Canton to play games with the residents.

World Vision is able to care for a child for one day for $1 and last year the teens raised enough money to feed more than 10 children for a year.

They raiseed money through events such as a Valentine’s banquet, food sale and individual donations. This year, they voted to dedicate their funds to children in Afghanistan.

Servant’s Heart Food Pantry, organized through the United Baptist Church of Peru, is now formally located at the old Peru school building. Hours are 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday through Thursday. For more information, call 562-7167.
