100 years ago, 1912
All those who gathered in Lewiston City Hall — a number to practically fill the hall — were delighted with the annual St. Patrick’s Day concert, which took the form of a song-lecture, “What Erin Tells in Song,” arranged by Father Glynn and Miss Margaret Flanagan of St. Joseph’s parish. The program was long, but was interesting and enjoyable. The lecture, explanatory of the songs and including bits of Ireland’s history, was given by Father Glynn and a charming feature near the opening of the program was the song which he contributed. A large harp was suspended from the centre of the platform.

50 years ago, 1962
Auburn Fire Chief J. Coleman Miller announced today that he has confiscated a supply of dangerous toys and teething rings which were being sold by Auburn firms. The chief said that a toy called “Willie the Whale” apparently is filled with an inflammable liquid, as is the teething ring. Chief Miller said he has visited all local retail establishments and confiscated the items on sale.

25 years ago, 1987
(Editorial)  The Twin Cities have lost an energetic and committed leader. Our community will be a poorer place without William C. Harkins, who passed away on Tuesday (March 17). As executive vice president of the Lewiston-Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce, Harkins came to personify the effort of the past several years to revive the Twin Cities’ economy and spirit. He succeeded to a remarkable degree in both endeavors. Harkins has left behind a rich legacy.
