100 years ago, 1912
Jacob J. and Moses Shapiro, owners of the four-story block in New Auburn which was completely destroyed by the fire of Sunday, March 19, and proprietors of the department store which occupied the entire first floor of the block, have decided to rebuild on the same site as soon as possible. The work of clearing away the ruins and righting about the business affairs of the company will take some time but immediately after this the construction of a new block will be commenced.
50 years ago, 1962
Auburn Police Capt. Stephen Smyc said today that he will seek a warrant against an Auburn business charging the owner with allowing a teen-ager to play a pin ball machine. An investigation of pin ball machines being played by teen-agers has been going on for some time and police have indicated on several occasions that arrests would be made. In this particular case, a 16-year-old boy is involved.
25 years ago, 1987
LISBON FALLS – The rich and long-standing heritage of local Slovak-Americans will be celebrated Thursday at the Lisbon Falls Community Library. The public is invited to attend the free cultural program which will feature the Maine premiere of the video, “Slovak Sunshine.” The program wil also include a presentation by Andrew Doboga, past president of the town’s Slovak Catholic Association.
