Unusual circumstances are connected with a break which was discovered Monday morning at Salem M. Petrous clothing store in the new Callahan block, 290 Lisbon St., Lewiston. Entrance was gained opening a rear basement window, which was not fastened. About $31, mostly in change, was taken from the cash register, as well as six watches and three watch chains, a pair of shoes, a shirt, a coat, and Mr. Petrous’s own overcoat, valued at $22. But the most peculiar part of the break was the finding of an old undercoat on the railing of the basement stairs. In this coat, City Marshall Caillier found papers and a letter which apparently belonged to a dealer in dry goods and men’s furnishings who is in business a few doors south of the Petrous store. That businessman said the coat had been stolen from him Sunday evening.

The people who will check and count the votes in today’s Lewiston election were urged to take their time and avoid mistakes. Mayor Emile (Bill) Jacques spoke to nearly 100 election workers called together by City Clerk Lucien Lebel. Jacques said his purpose in talking to the group was not to insinuate there has been carelessness on their part, but only an election-eve appeal for more of the fine work that Lewiston election workers are noted for.

Tuesday’s debate was quick, but the answer from the Lewiston City Council was clear: Ordinances to regulate adult-entertainment establishments will not be enacted. In a matter of minutes, councilors voted 5-2 against referring two proposed regulations to the city’s Ordinance Committee, effectively killing the plan. The proposals, identical to those enacted by Old Orchard Beach, would have outlawed the “use of obscenity for commercial gain” and regulated “nudity as a form of commercial expression.”
