FARMINGTON — Gordon Levant “Tut” Snell, 90, of Farmington, passed away, Friday, Feb. 10, at the Franklin Memorial Hospital.

He was born June 6, 1921, in Madison, a son of the late James Bert and Janet (Otis) Snell.

Gordon attended Madison schools and was a veteran of World War II, serving as a gunner’s mate in the U.S. Navy.

On Jan. 9, 1942, he married Mona Gilcott.

Gordon worked for Anson Stick Co. in Madison for 30 years and retired in 1992. After retiring, he and his wife, Mona liked to take road trips throughout Maine. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, swimming and boxing. Another favorite pastime was telling old war stories and how he used to swim in the Kennebec River in Madison.

He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Mona of Farmington; his daughters, Donna Cole and her husband, Lawrence, of Vienna, Diane Phelan of Jay and Peggy Lightbody and her husband, David, of Skowhegan; his sons, Johnny Snell and his wife, Jeanie, of East Madison, Larry Snell and his wife, Pat, of Madison and David Snell and his wife, Kathy, of Canaan; 18 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sisters, Lois Ray, Marie Brown and Kathleen Snell; his brothers, Robert and Howard “Barney” Snell; twin daughters, Janet and Janice Snell; and a son-in-law, Michael Phelan.
