Valentine’s dance

FARMINGTON — Farmington Emblem Club 460 will hold a Valentine’s Dance from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Farmington Elks Lodge. Entertainment provided by Legends.

Free supper

JAY — The Knights of Columbus will hold their monthly free public supper, with support this month by A. Maurais & Son Inc., from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Knights hall, Main Street. Doors open at noon.

Menu will include shepherd’s pie, minestrone soup, coleslaw, vegetables and drinks.

Poet to visit

FARMINGTON — The UMF Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing Program welcomes nationally-renowned performance poet Sean Thomas Dougherty as the next author in its 2011-12 Visiting Writers Series. Dougherty will read from his work at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in The Landing in the UMF Olsen Student Center. The reading is free and open to the public and will be followed by a signing by the author.

Dougherty is the author or editor of 12 books of poetry and mixed-genre writing that bring his working class life experiences to life. His works include “Except by Falling,” “Sasha Sings the Laundry on the Line” and his forthcoming “All I Ask For Is Longing: New and Selected Poems 1994-2014.”

Dougherty’s work has been nominated nine times for the Pushcart prize. He has also received two Pennsylvania Council for the Arts Fellowships in Poetry and a Fulbright Lectureship to the Balkans.

Dougherty is currently serving as a part-time creative writing professor at Cleveland State University.

Online presence

JAY — An informal workshop on “Web 101 — Getting an Online Presence” will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at the Androscoggin Bank Community Room, 6 Androscoggin Lane. It is free and open to the public.

Phil Poirier of Protean Graphics will provide the workshop, sponsored by the Jay, Livermore, Livermore Falls Chamber of Commerce. This workshop will be a basic introduction to the Web and to the many ways to get a Web presence. There will be an overview presentation with plenty of time for questions and answers in an informal and comfortable setting.
