FARMINGTON — Five Franklin County men pleaded not guilty to kidnapping charges in two separate cases Friday. A sixth man pleaded not guilty to robbery in a third case.
Shane Webber, 25, of New Vineyard, and Dahlong Campbell, 22, of Jay entered pleas of not guilty to kidnapping, criminal threatening and violating condition of release in Franklin County Superior Court. Campbell also pleaded not guilty to trafficking in illegal drugs.
The two men are accused of holding a Farmington woman at gunpoint against her will at a New Vineyard Road residence in Farmington in what police said was a drug deal gone bad. Both men were indicted on Jan. 12 on the charges.
Campbell will remain out of jail on $5,000 cash bail and a pretrial service agreement.
Webber is being held on $10,000 cash bail in the kidnapping case. He also is being held without bail on a charge of illegal possession of oxycodone in a separate case.
According to Farmington police, the victim was held because “her male friend” had sold $2,000 worth of fake drugs to one of the men.
Justice Michaela Murphy lifted a no contact order on Campbell to allow him to see his mother, Sandi McAlpine of Jay. McAlpine was initially arrested in the case but was not indicted earlier this month.
In a separate case, Kevin Crandall, 28, of Wilton, Michael Kidd Jr., 20, of Chesterville, and Marcus Thompson, 23, of Farmington each pleaded not guilty to robbery, two counts of kidnapping, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, two counts of burglary, three counts of theft by unauthorized taking or transfer. Kidd and Crandall also pleaded not guilty each to one count of violation condition of release.
Three men were indicted on Jan. 12 on the charges. They are accused of breaking into three homes on Oct. 31 in areas near Mt. Blue High School and taking money, handguns and other items.
In one incident, a couple told police they were held at gunpoint and knives were displayed while they were being robbed. Crandall is accused of staying with the wife while her husband was taken to an ATM machine by the other two.
They were also threatened by the men, who said they would return if the couple spoke to police.
A neighbor near a Hilltop Estate home that was burglarized remembered seeing a blue car with three men inside near the home. Another burglary was reported on the Dutch Gap Road in Chesterville and one on the Lucy Knowles Road.
Police found items stolen from the homes in plain view in a blue car left in a field near the Knowlton Corner Farm that evening. A trained dog tracked Crandall and Thompson to Seamon Road where police arrested them behind the high school.
Crandall and Kidd have bail set at $50,000 cash and Thompson’s bail is set at $30,000 cash.
In a third case, Robert Judd, 32, of Livermore Falls pleaded not guilty to felony robbery in the case of a 27-year-old Wilton man held up at gunpoint on Dec. 9, 2011, on Curve Street in Wilton.
Judd is being held on $50,000 cash bail or $100,00 worth of real estate.
According to a Wilton police affidavit, the victim of the robbery contacted police at about 6:20 p.m. on Dec. 9 saying he had been hit on the head and robbed at gunpoint. He told police $2,000 was taken from him.
