100 years ago, 1912

For continued cold weather the past week has nearly broken all standing records. Sunday morning was a fitting climax to the week, the thermometer at the gate house registering the minimum of 18 below at seven o’clock. As late as 10 a.m., Sunday, it was four below zero. Thermometers at private houses in the city went anywhere from 20 to 30 below while in surrounding towns Sabattus led with 32 below.

50 years ago, 1962

Lewiston Public Works Department snow-removal crews go to work today around Memorial Armory where the 21st Maine Agricultural Trades Show opens Tuesday for a three-day run.

Crews will concentrate on clearing streets in the area for the convenience of the visitors to the trade show. The streets to be cleared include Central and Campus avenues, Franklin and Vale streets.

25 years ago, 1987

Gov. John McKernan Jr. will help Bates College kick off its 67th annual Winter Carnival Thursday when he lights a torch that student runners will carry from Augusta to the Lewiston campus.

The carnival, one of the oldest such festivals in the United States, offers plenty of outdoor activities and nighttime entertainment. Many events are open to the public.
