FARMINGTON — An entry level basketball program for boys and girls in grades one or two, or those 6 years of age, begins Tuesday, Jan. 10, at the Farmington Recreation Department.

Registrations for Prep Basketball are being accepted through Tuesday. A single group of players will meet from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays starting Jan. 10 for six weeks at Bjorn Gymnasium at Farmington Community Center.

The program is in its 19th year of introducing youngsters to the sport of basketball in a noncompetitive format.

Each child will begin to learn the rules and fundamental skills through drills, fun games, contests and controlled scrimmages. Players will come away from the program with a basic understanding and working knowledge of the game.

The department intends to make this a pressure-free atmosphere. There will be no team assignments, playing schedules or trophies to win. Players will use the most appropriate youth size basketballs and the rims at the Bjorn Gymnasium will be set at 8 feet to encourage shooting success for all.

Kim Richards has many years of basketball coaching experience. She has been the director of the Junior Pro Basketball program for the past 20 years as well as the 1991 travel team coach and a three-year student volunteer coach. Her son, Dustin, has been assisting her with Prep Basketball the past several years.

Registration fees are $2 for residents and $5 for nonresidents or whose parents do not pay property taxes to Farmington. A souvenir Prep Basketball T-shirt will be provided to each participant at no extra cost.

Registration forms are available at the Recreation Department office in the Farmington Community Center.
