Invitations have been sent out for a Chrysanthemum ball to be given in Clifford’s Hall on the evening of Jan. 12 by the juniors of the Lewiston Normal Training school. The young ladies in the junior class are Emma C. Ryan, Grace A. Adams, A. Ruth Dudley, Grace L. Dexter, Cora R. Scruton, Louise A. Temple, Florence K. Lewis, Irma M. Wadsworth and Katherine C. Meehan.
50 years ago, 1962
A new Corn Cabin Popcorn store, introducing to Lewiston a new concept in popcorn which is currently sweeping the country, has opened at 41 Lisbon St.
The Lewiston store is owned and operated by Frank Patten of Saco who holds the franchise for the new stores in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The local store is being managed by his son, Robert Patten, who plans to soon become a Lewiston resident.
The national chain has headquarters in Elgin, Ill., and the chain is operated by R. G. Gronowski, who has been in the popcorn business for the past 25 years.
25 years ago, 1987
AUGUSTA — Five towns were honored at a State House ceremony Friday for being the first in Maine, and among the first 200 in the nation, to be officially designated as “bicentennial communities” in the year-long national celebration to mark the signing of the U.S. Constitution.
Maine Chief Justice Vincent L. McKusick presented special plaques to officials from Skowhegan, Dresden, Kennebunk, Topsham and Wilton.
