FARMINGTON — Two Franklin County Sheriff’s Department cruisers will go out to bid to see if they will bring more money than trading them in.

If bids for the 2007 Ford Expedition and Ford Explorer come in under the trade-in value, the vehicles will be traded, Chief Deputy Raymond Meldrum said.

The Expedition has 159,000 miles on it, and the Explorer has 132,000 miles, he said.

County commissioners voted Tuesday to buy two new Expeditions from Farmington Ford for $65,672. After trade-in, they would cost $58,472.70.

Traditionally the Sheriff’s Department buys three cruisers each year. Meldrum budgeted $75,000 for vehicles in this fiscal year.

When the request to submit bids went out this year, the bids came back over budget.

Commissioners rejected all of them and had Meldrum put them out to bid for a second time.

Only Farmington Ford put in a bid in the second round.

After reviewing the prices and specifications, Meldrum said the department would like to buy two Expeditions and not a third vehicle.
