FARMINGTON — A couple of local church organizations are starting to organize a CROP Hunger Walk that would take place in Farmington in spring 2012.
CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty. Church World Service has sponsored these community-wide events since 1969, raising money to fight hunger both in the community and around the world. The event will be a low-impact walk through town, organized by churches of various denominations and by secular organizations.
Walkers ask other people to sponsor them by donating money, with 25 percent of these donations staying in Franklin County, such as for local food pantries, and 75 percent going to Church World Service’s global programs for disaster relief, hunger relief and rural development, or to other approved hunger-fighting organizations if so designated by the sponsor.
Each year about 2000 communities nationwide hold CROP Walks, raising nearly $300 million over the past two decades. See www.cropwalk.org for more information.
This effort will require a core leadership team that includes, at the very least, an overall coordinator, a treasurer, a recruitment leader and a logistics/safety leader. Other useful leadership roles could involve online promotion, publicity/communications, business sponsorship and education. Any who feel called to be a leader, or who would like more information, should contact Sueli Gaewsky at Old South First Congregational Church, 778-0424 or sueligaewsky@hotmail.com.
