Darts benefit

AUBURN — Central Maine Dart League will hold a benefit dart tournament for the family of Penny Patenaude on Friday, Dec. 16, at New Auburn Social Club, 7 Second St. Sign-ups at 6 p.m., tournament starts at 7.

Entry fee is $10. First place will have a $200 prize, based on 40 players.

Lessons, carols

LEWISTON — “Lessons and Carols for Advent and Christmas” will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, at Basilica of Saints Peter & Paul, 122 Ash St.

Event will include carols, music and scripture readings for the season. Scott Vaillancourt, director, and Basilica Choir will perform.

‘Festival of Lessons’

LEWISTON — The Festival of Lessons and Carols will be celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve, Saturday, Dec. 24, at Free Grace Presbyterian Church, 160 Canal St.

First used in England on Christmas Eve in 1880, the Festival of Lessons and Carols celebrates the birth of Jesus. The service consists of nine short readings from the Bible, the lessons, accompanied by the singing of carols.

These lessons and carols tell the story of Christmas, the arrival of God’s promised one, from God’s first promise in Genesis through Jesus’ birth as told in the Gospels.

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Senior Citizens Cribbage League winners at the Multi-Purpose Center on Dec. 8 were: first place, Robert Oliver and Roger Briggs; second place, Sandy Verrill two player table; third place, Edith Chambers and Don Haley; fourth place, Sue Dunlap and Louise Pelletier; fifth place, Shirley Labonte and Stan Tetenman.

Next game will be played at 9 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 15. After the game the group will celebrate their annual holiday banquet. For further information, call Roger Labbe at 212-9253.

Social bridge

LEWISTON — The Lewiston-Auburn Social Bridge Club winners at the Multi-Purpose Center on Dec. 12 were as follows: first, Les Buzzell and Paul Sherman; second, Lue Bilodeau and Alberta Turner; third, Pete Cummings and Mike True; first in B, Lue Bilodeau and Alberta Turner; second, Larry Fortier and Roger Labbe.

Camp Sum Fun

AUBURN — Sylvan in Auburn is offering a free Camp Sum Fun for children in grades 1-3. Camp will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 27-30 at the Sylvan Learning Center.

Camp will be a fun approach for children to improve understanding of basic addition and subtraction facts, while increasing speed and accuracy. Call 784-6801 to preregister.

Babysitting course

MECHANIC FALLS — Girl Scouts of Maine will offer the “Babysitting 101” training program for all area girls in grades 5-8 in the Mechanic Falls, Minot and Poland area.

The program will include, getting a baby-sitting business started, playtime ideas for children of all ages, understanding the likes and dislikes of children, troubleshooting and solutions to the most common problems a baby-sitter faces and Babysitting 101 certification.

The program will be in the held within the Mechanic Falls, Minot and Poland area from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21. Preregistration is necessary. The cost of the program is $6 for currently registered Girl Scouts and $18 for non-Girl Scouts, which includes the $12 Girl Scout membership fee. Membership assistance is available for this fee.
