Michael Smilek of Farmington, father of Justin Crowley-Smilek, a veteran who was shot outside the Farmington police station in late November, holds a card with a picture of his son during a vigil held at Veterans Park in Lewiston on Saturday. More than two dozen veteran supporters marched across the Longley Bridge from Lewiston to Auburn in an effort to bring awareness to the needs of veterans after they are discharged from active duty back into civilian life. A veteran who wished not to be identified said this is not about the police or law enforcement; it’s about the desperate needs of some of our returning soldiers — they need help and the system has not been there for them. Michael Smilek said he was very moved and touched by the show of support for his son.
