NEW VINEYARD — Nine fire departments, dozens of firefighters and lots of trucks responded to a fire at Maine Wood Turning Inc.’s sawmill building off Lake Road on Monday afternoon.

It was called in as a fire in the chip room at about 1:30 p.m., New Vineyard fire Chief Doug Churchill said mid afternoon.

Employees were evacuated safely from the 85- by 200-foot building, which has metal siding and roofing on it.

Smoke was seen coming from the eaves of the building and openings.

Firefighters from New Vineyard, New Portland, Kingfield, Strong, Farmington, Strong, Phillips, Industry, Wilton and Jay were on the scene.  A NorthStar Emergency Medical Service crew stood by.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to inside the building but were still struggling to get all the hot spots out later in the day.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, Churchill said Monday night.

No one was injured, he said.

There was fire and water damage to less than a quarter of the building, Churchill said.

The Fletcher family of New Vineyard owns the company.

There will need to be some repairs done to the building, he said.

The sawmill building is where the wood is cut into squares to be turned into wood items at the main plant on Route 27, he said.
