HARRISON — The town of Harrison’s eight-week Fun, Friends and Fitness Summer Day Camp and six-week American Red Cross Swim Program ended in August. The final day was a celebration of summer fun at Crystal Lake Park with a barbecue and the annual 1.5-mile swim across Crystal Lake.
The 15 swimmers who made it to shore safely were Amy Milo, Jamie Mazer, Horst Schulze, Mae Milo, Dimitri DiBiase, Joey Gallant, Brandon Ronfeldt, Michelle Heroux, Katie Farrar, Katie Ebinger, Susan Hughes, Lynda Herskovitz, Carson Brynie, Julienne Cook and PJ Gallant. Kayakers and canoers who paddled alongside the swimmers to help if needed were Jessica DiBiase, Rob Cook, Ethan Kidd, Garrett Hudanish, Krista Hakala, Melissa Strauss and Bobbi Scribner. Peter Brown Jr. was nearby in his pontoon boat with his mother, Jennifer, in case of an emergency. The swim began at the beach at Vacationland Campground.
The big event during the second-to-last week was the popular Olympic Field Day when children competed for the gold, silver and bronze medals in 10 land events and one water event. This year 72 athletes competed for a medal.
The team winning gold led by counselor Krista Hakala was Spencer Hurd, Seth Patnaude, Jesse Leonard, Kylie Dennison, Mason Cilley, Kylie Blanchett, McKenzie Pierini and Lucas Currier. The silver medals were awarded to Brendon Patten, Savannah Barker, Nate Farrar, Kirsten Edwards, Diego Roy, Quin DiBiase and Katelyn Farrar, led by counselor Joey Gallant. Going home with the bronze, led by counselor Melissa Strauss, were Jake Knapp, Anna Berry, Rylee Ward, Jacob Lauria, Emily Pattle, Lucy Leonard, Colby Gosselin and Eric Lauria.
Counselors also competed against each other. Brandon Ronfeldt took gold, Krista Hakala took silver and Joey Gallant took bronze.
